Writer: Brianne WalterBrianne Walter

The holiday season is a magical time, but it can quickly become overwhelming with the endless to-do lists, cluttered spaces, and constant rushing from one activity to the next.

This year, let's embrace a slower, more intentional approach by simplifying our homes and creating space for what truly matters—quality time with loved ones.

In this post, we’ll explore practical ways to prepare your home for the holidays, reduce stress, and focus on what brings YOU joy. Whether it’s through thoughtful decluttering, intentional decorating, or simplifying your holiday routines, these tips will help you create a calm and inviting atmosphere that everyone can enjoy.

Why Simplifying Matters

Simplifying your home during the holidays isn’t just about having a tidy space—it’s about reclaiming your time and energy. When you’re not buried in clutter or bogged down by an overpacked schedule, you can:

  • Spend more time connecting with family.

  • Focus on meaningful traditions instead of “holiday hustle.”

  • Create a peaceful environment that fosters relaxation and joy for everyone in your family.

The holidays aren’t about perfection—they’re about presence. By simplifying, you can create a space where you and your family can truly savor the season without the unnecessary stress. Let's dive in!

Practical Tips to Simplify Your Home for Christmas

1. Declutter Before You Decorate

Before you start pulling out the bins of holiday decorations, take some time to declutter your home. Removing excess items will give you space to add festive touches without making your home feel overcrowded. Plus, a clutter-free space is much easier to keep clean during the busy holiday season.

For more inspiration on the benefits of decluttering and how it can transform your home, check out my blog post, The Benefits of Decluttering.

Key Areas to Declutter Before the Holidays:

  • Kitchen: Clear out expired pantry items and make room for holiday baking essentials. Clear out your refrigerator as well - expired condiments, spoiled foods, etc. Simple, but both of these make a big impact during a season where we're in the kitchen a lot more.

  • Living Room: Tidy up shelves, remove outdated decor, give it a dust and create space for your Christmas tree and all of the holiday decorations.

  • Closets and Entryway: Donate or store out-of-season items to make room for winter coats, boots, and holiday guests.

Pro Tip: Need a full guide on what to declutter? Stay tuned—I’ll share a detailed list of things to declutter before the holidays in an upcoming post!

2. Decorate with Intention

Instead of overloading your home with holiday decorations, focus on simple, impactful pieces. A beautifully lit Christmas tree, cozy throws, and a few well-placed garlands can create a festive atmosphere without overwhelming your space. Keep it cohesive by using similar types of greenery throughout the spaces, especially in an open concept.

3. Simplify Gift Giving

Gift-giving is often one of the most stressful parts of the holiday season, but it doesn't have to be! Simplify this process by:

  • Create a guest list.

  • Plan your budget for each person.

  • Focus on quality over quantity.

  • Opt for thoughtful, practical gifts that align with your values.

  • When in doubt - gift experiences! Local attractions, movie theatre passes, coffee cards, or a dinner to their favourite local restaurant. It doesn't have to be complicated!

4. Streamline Your Holiday Routines

The key to slowing down during the holidays is creating simple, manageable routines that reduce stress. For busy moms, this might mean:

  • Meal Prepping: Prepare holiday meals and treats ahead of time to avoid last-minute chaos. You can even do freezer meals for when you're hosting - check out my Hosting for the Holidays Series for even more tips and tricks on keeping hosting stress-free!

  • Setting Boundaries: Say no to activities or events that don’t align with your family’s priorities.

  • Simplifying Traditions: Focus on a few meaningful traditions instead of trying to do everything. Here is a list of some of our favourite Christmas traditions (that don't cost a lot of money!).

Enjoy the Holidays with Less Stress

By taking the time to simplify your home and routines this holiday season, you’ll create a space where you can truly connect with your loved ones. The holidays are fleeting, and slowing down allows you to savor the small, magical moments that make this season so special.

This year, let’s focus on less rushing and more quality time together. Because at the end of the day, the best gift you can give your family is your presence.
