Primary Bedroom Makeover: A Stunning Before and After Transformation

Writer: Brianne WalterBrianne Walter

When we first bought our fixer upper house, we knew that we would be making some changes. Let's just say the location is what sold us on this house! When you are tucked away on a quiet street that is unheard of with a private beach, is there anything better? I think not.

Back to the bedroom refresh and makeover. Some of the other DIY Home Renovation projects we did was refinishing our red oak hardwood floors to a lighter white oak finish, replacing the baseboards, installed recessed lighting, replaced the light fixtures / ceiling fans in some of the rooms, and painted the whole interior of the house a beautiful, bright and airy white!

BEFORE

We knew the house had potential, and thought that even painting the house a brighter colour would work wonders - and it definitely did!! We wanted to create a place to unwind after our busy days. A place of serenity, coziness, and stylish, all while keeping it on a budget. Our primary bedroom makeover journey transformed a dated space (in our 1960's fixer upper side split home), into a neutral, organic, modern retreat, and I'm so excited to share the process with you.

BEFORE: The Starting Point

Our primary bedroom, a typically 1960's space, was a blank canvas. I find this to be both a pro and a con when designing a new room makeover. Thankfully, there was no carpet, but the red oak floors had to go, along with the old, brown ceiling fan, and beige, yellow walls. While it had potential, it certainly need some TLC to become the tranquil room we envisioned. Key Issues:

  • Outdated

  • Red oak hardwood floors

  • Inadequate lighting

  • Awkward size

  • Small space

The Plan:

Our goal was to create a minimal, clean, and inviting space that felt more cozy and modern. Given our budget constraints (if you purchased a house in 2020,2021,2022, or 2023 - you get it!), we focused on DIY projects, shopping our own home, keeping existing furniture, and waiting for sales to get the best deals.

Step-by-Step Transformation

1. Painting the Walls

The first step was to tackle the walls. With is being a small primary bedroom, we wanted to make the room feel more open. After prepping the walls, we painted them a calming, neutral white, that added warmth without overwhelming the space.

2. Updating the Flooring

Next, we decided to tackle & refinish the hardwood floors. Sanding and staining the floors was a labor-intensive process, but it completely transformed the room, giving it a fresh and polished look. Here you can read about that process.

3. Improving the Lighting

We replaced the dated light fixture with a more modern and neutral ceiling fan. Our primary bedroom is on the top floor of our side-split, so keeping a ceiling fan was a non negotiable. Additionally, we installed colourful recessed lighting to create an ambiance.

4. Furniture: Mixing Old and New

We decided to keep all of our existing furniture due to budget constraints. To keep costs down, we shopped sales for affordable bedding that added a touch of luxury without breaking the bank. We added new bedding - new sheets, a new duvet insert, duvet cover, and the viral casaluna blanket from Target has since been added to create a neutral, cozy, bed. Eventually, we would like to upgrade our bedding, but we have other house projects that are more of a priority.

5. Storage and Organization

To tackle our storage issues, we plan on doing a whole closet makeover in the future!

6. Decorating and Final Touches

Finally, we focused on the finishing touches—soft, neutral curtains, cozy throw pillows, and a some greenery to bring life to the room.

After: The Big Reveal

The transformation was truly remarkable. Our once-dated bedroom is now a serene and stylish retreat. The neutral color palette, combined with the updated lighting and refinished floors, created a warm and inviting atmosphere. The mix of old and new furniture made the room functional and beautiful.

Cost Breakdown:

  • Wallpaper removal and paint: EST. $100

  • Flooring (sanding and staining): EST. $300

  • Lighting fixtures: $159

  • Bed frame: $0

  • Bedding and decor: $500

Total: $1,059
