Hosting for the Holidays: Prep Your Home in 5 Simple Steps!

Writer: Brianne WalterBrianne Walter

The holidays are just around the corner, and if you’re hosting family or friends, you know there’s a lot to prepare and it can be super stressful! From creating a welcoming space to ensuring everything is spotless, prepping your home doesn’t have to be overwhelming.

In today’s post, I’m breaking down my go-to steps to get your home ready for the holiday season — all while keeping it simple and budget-friendly. Whether you're expecting guests for dinner or having loved ones stay over, these tips will ensure your space is warm, inviting, and clutter-free.

Step 1: Declutter & Deep Clean

Before you even think about decorating, a quick declutter session can work wonders for how your space feels. Focus on high-traffic areas like the entryway, living room, kitchen, bathrooms, and guest rooms. Here’s my checklist to make it easier:

  • Living Room: Clear away excess decor, magazines, and toys. Clear and clean all of the surfaces.

  • Kitchen: Organize countertops, wipe down cabinets and knobs, and empty the fridge for holiday groceries.

  • Bathrooms: Clear out any old toiletries, empty bottles, restock essentials, and wipe down surfaces.

  • Entryway: Create a welcoming, clutter-free area for coats, shoes, and bags.

Quick Tip:

Focus on deep cleaning ONE room at a time, before moving on to the next room. Set a timer for 15-30 minutes to stay focused. You’ll be surprised at how much you can accomplish when you’re laser-focused!

Step 2: Create a Holiday Cleaning Caddy

A well-stocked cleaning caddy is my secret weapon for quick touch-ups before guests arrive. Here’s what I like to keep in mine:

  • Multi-surface cleaner (bonus points if it’s holiday-scented! Also use their bathroom cleaner on occasion).

  • Squeegee for cleaning mirrors and windows

  • Force of Nature for quick touch-ups / high touch point areas due to sick season, as well as the bathroom!

  • Microfiber cloths for dusting

  • Candle or essential oil spray to freshen up the room

  • Non Toxic Toilet Bowl Cleaner for a quick clean before guests arrive

With everything in one place, you can quickly go room-to-room and tackle any last-minute messes.

Step 3: Style Your Entryway for a Warm Welcome

Your entryway is the first thing guests see, so let’s make it cozy! A few small changes can go a long way in creating a welcoming atmosphere. Let's focus on our 5 senses. Here are some of my favorite touches:

  • Sight: Keep the space tidy and add a bit of decor—maybe a small wreath, some seasonal accents, or a clean, cozy festive mat and don’t forget to turn your TV into art using Youtube.

  • Smell: Add a pleasant, subtle scent, like a cinnamon or pine candle, that brings a cozy holiday feel without being overpowering. You can use essential oils, candles, or do a simmer pot.

  • Touch: Place a small rug or runner that feels soft and welcoming underfoot.

  • Sound: Soft background music or a playlist playing from a nearby speaker can set relaxed tone. - I have a great Christmas Music Playlist

  • Taste: For a sweet extra, a small bowl of individually wrapped mints or chocolates at the entrance is a nice, festive treat for guests to enjoy.

DIY Tip:

If you’re on a budget, consider adding a DIY wreath made from pine branches and ornaments for an extra personal touch. I did this for years and got most of my supplies from the dollar store and michaels.

Step 4: Refresh the Guest Room for Overnight Visitors

Make your guests feel at home with a few thoughtful touches in the guest room. Here’s a checklist for a quick refresh:

neutral guest bedroom, amazon bedding, affordable bedroom makeover, affordable bedding, guest bedroom, coastal

  • Fresh Linens & Towels: Nothing says “welcome” like a freshly made bed.

  • Bedside Essentials: Stock the nightstand with a water carafe, tissues, and a small lamp.

  • Extra Blankets: Layering blankets and throws makes the room cozy and lets guests adjust for warmth.

  • Charging Station: A small extension cord or USB charging station is always appreciated!

Budget-Friendly Tip:

Shop your own home first! You might already have extra linens, cozy blankets, or cute decorative pieces that would be perfect in the guest room.

Step 5: Decorate Simply & Elegantly

Holiday decor doesn’t have to be over the top. In fact, a minimal, intentional approach can be even more inviting. Here’s my go-to guide:

simple christmas decor, christmas tree, setting up the christmas tree, christmas decor 2024, christmas, holiday hosting, viral christmas tree

  • Stick to a Color Palette: Choose 2-3 colors that coordinate with your home’s decor.

  • Add Natural Elements: Pinecones, eucalyptus, and small evergreen branches add texture without feeling overdone. I love using potted trees and stems, or even going out and getting real cypress and cedar to bring the natural elements inside!

  • Create a Cozy Atmosphere: Use candles, soft lighting, and cozy textures like faux fur or knitted blankets to make the space feel warm and inviting. I love using browns or greens for a pop of colour and to balance all of the white.

  • Add a Festive Touch: I love doing a refresh to the kitchen and bathrooms by adding these festive towels.(use my code: BRIANNE for a discount!) They're both pretty and practical -- making them a must have this Holiday Season!

Final Touch: Delegate

Keep stress low by delegating! I talk about all of this (& more) in the youtube video. Delegating, whether it be to your spouse, your kids, or even your guests, will help you stay on top of everything ensuring nothing falls through the cracks!

Hosting doesn’t have to be stressful! With a bit of planning and a few intentional touches, you can create a welcoming, organized space that everyone will love.
